Getting Up & Going Out

Good God they were off putting. Left. Left. Leftleftleft.
Julia stared at the screen wondering if single men wanted to stay that way forever, as Marco, 27, held up his shirt to display what he probably imagined was a six pack, though if it was then it was one of those ones in the reduced rack where some of the cans had dents and the pack had had to be sellotaped shut. Left.

Tim, 32, posed, shades on, shirt off, a sea in blue rippling away behind him, holding up a large fish, whose terminal piscine expression pretty much mirrored Julia's. Why so many fish pictures? Like, about forty percent of the guys on here had a picture of them holding up a fish. It genuinely bemused her, she wondered if there was a female equivalent. Left.
Luke, 24, kind of looked ok - nice suit, good hair, the photo obviously from a wedding - several freelance limbs around the edges had survived the cropping. Well, let's have a look, Julia thought.Pic two he was trying to hold up the leaning tower of Pisa but hadn't got the angle quite right. Pic three he was on a gun range somewhere sunny, holding a sub machine gun, surrounded by The Lads who were all grinning like toddlers and waving at the camera. Hmmm. His profile read simply "I Have banter. You must have banter." Left.

The bus braked hard for a miscellaneous idiot, and her hovering finger, along with every torso on the deck, lurched forward. She just had time to see the face of Stan, 24, as the laws of motion forced her to jab the screen. Right.

Festivals, fields, picnics and parks

Splat. The ball arced perfectly into a tub of hummus, bounciness negated by the consistency of mashed chick pea. Dog followed at speed, careening into cans and packets, briefly acquiring a tortilla chip hat to human noises somewhere in between 'woah' 'hey' and 'hahaha'. Some Kid was now exhibiting the raised eyebrows and static appendages of those expecting imminent admonishment, hoping fervently that they wouldn't be held accountable for the whims of beast and physics.

Human forelimbs went on automatic negentropic overdrive, righting bottles, moving food and foolhardily attempting to counteract the canine exuberance. "I'm so sorry! Come here! Come HERE, sorry, leave it, Leaaave iiit!" said the voice of legally obliged responsibility. "He thinks you're playing," - the furry whirlwind continued, all tongue and tail - "just keep still a few seconds else he'll never stop."

♫  Bedtime

4. And it seemed to be plodding, this dolphin. And it seemed that its distinctive black and white patterning was very like a wimple, and a buckled hat would not have looked out of place, and the string of wooden beads with its pendant cross was not incongruous at all, dangling from the things neck.

In fact there was a line of these creatures in the canal, some with fins pressed together in front of them, in single file, chattering under their breath, the manic, unchanging grin of their facial markings parading before Stan's eyes.
The great curves of Delphinian backs implied a great weight upon them, and one, as it passed, turned to Stan and said "Will you not join us, brother? There will be turkey! At the end of this, turkey!"

Stan shook his head slowly, avoiding much eye contact, as one might when refusing a rose from a street seller. Nevertheless, he was in the line, trudging on now with the strange beasts, the canal a dusty track, and their locomotive means always just escaping explanation.
